My priority is getting you the memorial art glass you want – so I focus on getting design questions resolved up front.
The first questions I ask my clients are “do you want to see the ashes?” and “what color(s) do you want?” From there, we review the design options that will meet those criteria. I’ll also need to know if you want your bead strung on a black cotton cord (included), or if you’d like it wired into a pendant and/or strung on a sterling silver chain. See the last page of photos for add-on options and costs.
If you’d like your bead strung directly on a chain, appropriate styles include the simple memorial beads, small fancy memorial beads, and memorial heart pendants. Please let me know you’d like this option when you order – I need to know this before I make your bead.
Transparent glass shows the ashes, while opaque glass conceals.
If you don’t have access to ashes, but you have access to hair or fur, I can work with that. This picture shows how beads look when made with ashes or hair.
About Ordering –
I am working to set up a digital shopping cart; until the cart is up and running, I will continue to work directly with my clients via email and phone. My goal is to provide exceptional personalized customer care. I work very closely with my memorial bead clients, and am available via email and phone/text, Mondays through Fridays.
To get started:
- Take a look at the examples of my work on this page to see the various designs and options available. If you don’t see what you want, or if you’re not quite sure of what you want, I’ll be happy to consult with you.
- Send me an email with “Memorial Bead Order” in the subject line.
My address is: memorialartglass_at_christinehansen_dot_com. (Alternatively, find a contact form here.)
- I’ll need to know how many beads you want, the style and color, and finishing options. Bead purchases include a black cotton adjustable cord so you can wear your bead as a pendant. (The cotton cord doesn’t work for vertically-oriented beads such as the floral beads.)
- I will usually respond within one or two business days and we’ll get the details worked out to our mutual satisfaction.
- I will give you a total due, including USPS Priority Express Mail shipping costs ($35 for orders of 1-4 small pieces), and we will arrange payment. I accept Square, credit cards (via Square – you don’t need a Square account to use your credit card), and in many cases, personal checks. There is a small additional fee of 3% for paying via credit/debit card. Finished memorial glass will be sent via USPS Priority Express Mail, which includes insurance, tracking, and delivery confirmation. USPS regulations require that cremated remains be labeled as such, and shipped via Priority Express. Priority Express service is the fastest, most secure delivery method for your memorial pieces. My shipping rates reflect the cost of this service.
- You’ll send me the ashes, payment, and any information or pictures of your beloved that you think might be helpful. I’ll send you an email to let you know your package has arrived safely.
- I’ll make your memorial glass, and send pictures of the finished work via text or email for your approval. Turnaround is roughly 4-6 weeks once I’ve received ashes and payment.
- Once you’ve approved the pictures of your order, I will add wirework/chain (if you ordered it), and ship out your order, with the extra ashes. I track each return package and confirm with you that you’ve received it.
- Please place the ashes I return to you in a safe spot, so that I may make a replacement for you in case of loss or damage.
The Glass –
Each bead is shaped by hand and as such, varies in size, depending on whether or not I must add glass to cover the ashes. In general, here are rough sizes for each style:
Simple memorial beads and small round fancy memorial beads – about 5/8″ tall (from hole end to hole end), and about 5/8″-3/4″ in diameter.
Memorial heart pendants (these have a hole in one lobe of the heart – roughly 1-1/4″-1-1/2″ wide by about 1-1/4″-1-1/2″ tall.
Medium fancy memorial beads – these vary, depending upon style. The flat tab beads (Starry Nights and Nebulae) are about 1-1/8″-1-1/2″ in length, about 3/4″-1″ wide, and a little over 1/4″ thick. The Galaxy Swirl and Stardust Memories bicone beads are about 1-1/8″-1-1/2″ long, and roughly 5/8″-3/4″ in diameter at the largest point.
Large fancy memorial beads also vary in size, depending upon style. These and the massive beads are quite substantial and feel good in the hand – they range in length from 1-3/4″ to about 2″ long, and width might be anywhere from 3/4″ for a bicone to 1-3/8″ for a bead that is pressed into a flat tab shape. They are easily 1/2″-5/8″ thick.
Massive fancy memorial beads – These are roughly 2-3/4″-3″ long, 1-1/2″-1-3/4″ wide, and 7/8″-1″ thick. They weigh about 4 ounces, and take 2-1/2 to 3 hours to create, not including prep work. These take such a toll on my hands and wrists, that I am limited to making one massive bead per week.
The small heart-shaped comfort stones are about 1-1/2″ wide by 1-1/4″ tall, and close to 3/8″ thick, while the large heart-shaped comfort stones are closer to 2″ wide by 1-1/2″ tall.
The floral memorial beads vary depending upon style. The oval fuchsia bead measures roughly 1-1/4″ tall by 1″ wide, while the heart-shaped calla lily bead measures about 1-1/4″ tall by 1-1/4″ wide. The bicone (vase-shaped) beads are approximately 1-1/4″ tall by approximately 5/8″ diameter at the largest point.
***I do try to accommodate size preferences, but my priority for making a memorial bead is protecting the ashes and making a lovely bead. Size is a secondary consideration.***
Simple Memorial Bead – $95
Simple memorial beads – these are one-color beads, with or without fine silver foil. The ashes may be under the glass, as in the blue and green beads, or on the surface, as in the red bead, according to your preference. Available in every color I have on hand. $95.
Small Fancy Bead – $135
Small fancy memorial beads – These beads require significant advance preparation and multiple steps to ensure their beauty. In my beads, the ashes become a part of the design and contribute their own beauty to the whole of the composition. The ashes are slightly less visible in the Starry Night design than the others. Fancy designs include Galaxy Swirl (available in blue, green, pink, and brown, other colors possible), Starry Night (available in blue, green, purple, topaz, red, aqua, teal and other light-to-medium intensity transparent colors), Nebula (available in various blues, purples, greens, teals and aquas), and Stardust Memories (available in a wide range of color combinations – see chart of Frit Color options below). $135.
Memorial heart pendant – $135
Memorial heart pendants – these are typically single-color hearts, with or without fine silver foil, and with or without frit (small pieces of glass in mixed colors). The ashes are wrapped around the center of the heart, close to the surface and easily visible. Available in every color I have on hand, and easy to customize in your special colors. These hang at an angle. $135.
Medium Fancy Bead – $155
Medium fancy memorial beads – These beads are the same as the small fancy beads in that they require significant advance preparation and multiple steps to ensure their beauty. Again, visibility of the ashes depends on the design.
Fancy designs include Galaxy Swirl (available in blue, green, pink, and brown, other colors possible), Starry Night (available in blue, green, purple, topaz, red, and many other light-to-medium intensity transparent colors), Nebula (available in a wide range of transparent colors), and Stardust Memories (available in a wide range of color combinations). $155.
Comfort Stones – $135-$155
Comfort stones – For those who wish to keep their memorial glass in a pocket or on a desk. Available in every color I have.
As comfort stones are made off-mandrel, I must limit the complexity of the design. If you prefer a more detailed design, I must make it as a bead, on a mandrel. In this case, please see my medium, large, and massive fancy beads.
The small comfort stones are about twice the size of a heart pendant – a little larger in overall size, but much thicker. The small heart-shaped comfort stones are about 1-1/2″ wide by 1-1/4″ tall, and close to 3/8″ thick, while the large heart-shaped comfort stones are closer to 2″ wide by 1-1/2″ tall. No hole. Small comfort stone, $135, large comfort stone, $155.
Large Fancy Bead – $175
Large fancy memorial beads – Regardless of size, my fancy beads all require significant advance preparation and multiple steps to ensure their beauty. As always, visibility of the ashes depends on the design.
Massive Fancy Bead – $375
Massive fancy memorial beads – Well into paperweight/small sculpture territory, these beads are the same as the other fancy beads in that they require significant advance preparation and multiple steps to ensure their beauty.
These beads weigh approximately 1/4 pound, and are more organically shaped than my other beads. Not including prep work, my massive beads take 2-1/2 to 3 hours to create. My hands and wrists limit me to making only one massive bead per week. $375.
Floral Memorial Bead – $225-$250
Floral memorial beads – The most technically demanding of the memorial designs I offer. I have been making detailed floral focals for years – every new design requires many hours of experimentation and practice before I will consider offering it for sale.
Hours of extensive preparation precede each floral bead – I pull multiple complex stringers for each of the floral components before I even think about starting the bead base. Creating the floral design itself can be a challenge and takes many careful steps – I use a hot flame to coax hair-thin strands of glass to adhere to the base bead without melting all the way in – a challenge, to be sure!
Pricing varies on my floral designs, and depends upon how technically challenging each design is. Floral beads are available in any base color (fuchsia beads need to be on a pale opaque base), you may select the bloom color(s) as well. Ash visibility will depend upon your base color selection. $225-$250.
Add-on Finishing Options – $20-25
Add-on Finishing Options – For those comfortable making their own jewelry, I offer memorial beads a la carte, shipped with included black cotton adjustable cord.
For those who want a bead turned into a ready-to-wear pendant, I offer sterling silver wirework, using sturdy 18 gauge Argentium sterling silver headpins that I make myself. (Argentium sterling silver contains a small amount of germanium, which inhibits tarnishing of the silver.) Sterling silver wire work +$20.
For those wanting to add a chain, I offer a lovely 18″ sterling silver rope chain, available with a lobster clasp or a toggle clasp (your choice). 18″ Sterling silver rope chain +$25.
If you want to order a bead that can be put directly on the sterling silver chain, please let me know when ordering, as this influences how I make your bead.
